Cassandra Whitten obtained her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Southern Mississippi and began her career at a private laboratory in Nashville, Tennessee, as a special chemist. There, she conducted qualitative and quantitative procedures to test for the presence or absence of drugs in biological materials. She later became a forensic scientist for the State of Mississippi, spending two years in the toxicology department. In this role, she studied how drugs and alcohol interact with the human body and developed expertise in laboratory instrumentation, allowing her to serve as an expert witness in criminal hearings. Her next career move brought her back to the private sector, where she became the laboratory manager for an agricultural laboratory in Vicksburg, Mississippi. In this role, she managed employees, maintained and calibrated technical instrumentation, and handled administrative tasks such as inventory and ordering. She also oversaw data compilation, review, and submission, ensuring accurate analysis of up to 3,500 samples of agricultural materials, including soil, fertilizer, water, and manure, each day. In 2022, she accepted her current position with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Research and Development Center. In this role, she takes on multiple responsibilities within her team, including managing government purchases, tracking supply orders, overseeing radioactive material handling, maintaining inventory for laboratory supplies and chemicals, and coordinating building maintenance.
