Dr. Rutherford is a research engineer from the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center. He obtained a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering from Mississippi State University and went on to obtain a Ph.D. in Materials Science from the University of Alabama. Since that time he has worked primarily on developing airfield matting for over 5 years, as well as temporary pavement structures such as matting to bridge the littoral zone on beaches and provide access roads to flooded areas. Additionally, Dr. Rutherford has worked with allied nations in NATO to develop international understanding of temporary airfield structures for interoperability, tiedown and anchoring structures with airfield infrastructure, development of emerging technologies such as additive manufacturing and shape memory alloys.
